Among its many hidden gems is a place that feels as though it has stepped straight out of a fairy tale – Gillette Castle in East Haddam, Connecticut. I’ve always been fascinated by medieval castles. Their grand architecture, mysterious passageways, and centuries of history never fail to capture my imagination. So, when I discovered that Connecticut has its very own castle with a delightfully quirky personality, I knew I had to visit. In July 2022, we finally got the chance to visit this magical destination.
Perched high above the Connecticut River, Gillette Castle was built by the legendary actor William Gillette, best known for portraying Sherlock Holmes on stage. Rather than creating a traditional medieval fortress, Gillette designed a whimsical stone mansion that has been described as an “American fairy tale with a touch of European flair.” Every corner of the castle reflects his creativity and eccentricity; from hidden passageways and secret doors to ingenious trick locks and movable tables that glide along built-in tracks.
A visit to Gillette Castle is more than just exploring a historic home; it’s like stepping into the imaginative world of one of America’s most fascinating personalities.
As the story goes, the idea for Gillette Castle was born during a leisurely sail along the Connecticut River. Renowned stage actor and playwright William Gillette was captivated by the breathtaking sight of seven majestic hills rising above the riverbanks, known as the Seven Sisters. At the time, he had planned to build his retirement home in the Hamptons on Long Island. But the beauty of these rolling hills changed everything. Enchanted by the landscape, Gillette abandoned his original plans and chose this remarkable spot overlooking the Connecticut River as the site for his dream home.
William Gillette was an acclaimed American actor, playwright, director, and theatrical manager, best remembered for bringing the fictional detective Sherlock Holmes to life on stage. His portrayal became so influential that it helped shape the image of Sherlock Holmes that many people recognize today. Between his first performance in 1899 and his final appearance on March 19, 1932, Gillette played Holmes an astonishing 1,300 times, earning both widespread fame and considerable fortune.
With the success of his theatrical career, Gillette set out to build his dream home overlooking the Connecticut River in East Haddam. But this was no ordinary mansion. Inspired by his imaginative mind and love of mystery, he designed a castle that Sherlock Holmes himself would have admired; a fascinating blend of medieval charm, ingenious engineering, and whimsical creativity.
Every room reflects Gillette’s extraordinary attention to detail. The castle is filled with clever inventions and quirky features that he personally designed, including unusual handcrafted doorknobs and trick locks, hidden passageways, movable furniture, and even a system of concealed mirrors that allowed him to discreetly observe the public rooms from his bedroom. Exploring Gillette Castle feels less like touring a historic home and more like stepping into a real-life mystery novel, where every corner holds a delightful surprise.
Gillette personally designed his fairy-tale-inspired castle and supervised every stage of its construction between 1914 and 1919. The result was a remarkable 24-room, 14,000-square-foot mansion built from wood, cement, and locally quarried fieldstone. While the exterior resembles a medieval fortress, the interior reflects the warmth and craftsmanship of the American Craftsman style, enhanced by Gillette’s extraordinary imagination and attention to detail.
True to his eccentric personality, Gillette filled the castle with ingenious and unconventional features. Visitors can discover hidden passageways, a secret room, 47 uniquely designed wooden doors fitted with intricate, Steampunk-inspired latches, and even an elaborate three-mile-long narrow-gauge railroad that once wound its way around the estate.
Standing before the castle today, it’s easy to understand why it continues to captivate visitors. Built from beautiful gray and chalk-white local fieldstone and supported by a hidden steel framework, the castle appears to rise naturally from the rocky hillside overlooking the Connecticut River. Its timeless architecture, whimsical details, and breathtaking setting make it feel less like a house and more like a storybook castle brought to life.

The stunning location, combined with Gillette’s extraordinary creation, has made the estate a destination for visitors for generations. Over the years, the castle has welcomed many notable guests, including legendary figures such as Albert Einstein, Helen Hayes, and Charlie Chaplin, who were reportedly among those who visited this one-of-a-kind retreat.
Following William Gillette’s death in 1937, the property was acquired by the State of Connecticut in 1943. It was transformed into a public landmark and officially became Gillette Castle State Park, allowing visitors from around the world to experience its fascinating architecture, mysterious details, and spectacular river views. Today, the park attracts approximately 350,000 visitors every year, continuing Gillette’s legacy of creativity and imagination.
The setting of Gillette Castle is just as captivating as the castle itself. Nestled among a chain of seven prominent hills in the region, William Gillette named his 184-acre estate “The Seventh Sister”, inspired by the surrounding landscape known as the Seven Sisters.
Beyond the castle walls, the property offers a wonderful opportunity to explore Connecticut’s natural beauty. Scenic hiking trails wind through the estate, leading visitors through peaceful woodlands and offering beautiful viewpoints along the way. The park also features picnic areas, spots to relax, and places to enjoy a meal surrounded by nature.
With its combination of fascinating history, unique architecture, and breathtaking outdoor scenery, Gillette Castle State Park is truly one of the most beautiful places to experience the charm of Connecticut’s countryside. Whether you come for the castle or the trails, this magical destination has something for everyone to enjoy.
The 24-room castle is filled with fascinating surprises that reveal William Gillette’s playful personality and inventive spirit. Throughout the home, visitors can discover puzzle locks, secret doors, and hidden mirrors; clever creations that allowed Gillette to discreetly observe his guests, and make perfectly timed dramatic entrances for their entertainment.
Close to 80 years after Gillette’s death the house he built upon a hill remains in the spotlight and continues to delight audiences and serves as his never-ending curtain call.
